The queer association Temida is a queer-activist, left-wing trans community organization that organizes, works and fights to create a safe, equal, dignified political, legal, and social environment for trans and queer people.
Here is the overview of Temida for June/July 2024:
- After the parliamentary majority leaders presented an anti-LGBT legislative initiative in February, TV channel “Imedi” began actively broadcasting false and manipulative stories about so-called “LGBT propaganda.” Community organization “Temida” and the Women’s Initiatives Supporting Group (WISG) studied these stories and, based on a series of discriminatory statements, filed a complaint with the Georgian Charter of Journalistic Ethics against TV channel “Imedi.” The Ethics Charter investigated and found that the authors of the anti-LGBT stories broadcast on “Imedi” in March 2024 violated the 1st, 7th, and 11th principles of the Charter. Information about the violated principles can be found on “Temida’s” Facebook page.
- With the support of the International Trans Fund (ITF), “Temida” offers a crisis support service to binary and non-binary trans people, aimed at improving the health of community members. In addition, within the same project, the organization provides access to social worker services, free consultations with various medical specialists, and more. Detailed information and access to the crisis support service can be found at this link.
- The organization’s magazine “Bianka” was published for the first time this year and is already available in digital format. The magazine includes the bodily narratives and views of several trans authors, among which many similarities, differences, and sometimes contradictions can be found. The magazine is named in memory of the transgender woman, Bianca Shigurova, who was found dead in her apartment in 2016. By using this name, “Temida” aims to preserve the memory of not only Bianca but also all those trans* people who embodied a threat to the normative gender order and the violent system built upon it and who became victims of this system. The publication is supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Georgia. To view the digital version of the magazine, visit this link.
- As part of the “Employment Consultant” project, “Temida” conducted an online workshop on “Employment Opportunities and CV Preparation.” The organization shared tips with participants on the skills needed for employment, the specifics of CV preparation, creating motivational texts, and the current standards in the general employment market. Within the project, “Temida” trained and employed a total of 58 beneficiaries. The project is implemented with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Norway within the initiative “Leadership, Equality, Advocacy, and Democracy.”
- To support queer artists, “Temida” began collaborating with the local queer event series LEASH, organized by club KHIDI. The first event within this collaboration was held on July 13th. Guests at the event had the opportunity to receive “Temida’s” HIV prevention T-Packs for free, which included a rapid HIV test, condoms, lubricants, and an informational flyer about gender affirmation.
